DSE assessments
A DSE assessment is an assessment of risk associated with the use of computers, laptops, tablets and other display screens at work.
This is useful in ascertaining whether any screen-based activities in the workplace require alteration either through differing strategies or alternative equipment.
It is also useful for an employer as there is a legal requirement to provide Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessments to ensure full compliance with The Health and Safety Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Regulations (1992).
It is generally recommended that a DSE assessment is undertaken:
- When an employee is first employed within the team
- If an employee falls pregnant and requires risk assessment
- When there have been significant changes to the working space or equipment – for example, following an office move, or working from home
- Discomfort has been reported by the employee whilst at their workstation
- An injury or health condition is impacting them at work
- As part of a regular review of risk e.g., every 2 years
Workplace Assessments
A workplace assessment is a process involving:
- Evaluation of the working environment, work associated tasks, techniques, and abilities of an employee
- Provision of individualised recommendations relating to how to support an employee at work, or help them return to work safely. These may be reasonable adjustments or modifications, equipment changes, recommendations relating to phased returns or working pattern alterations
- Can be helpful in various employment types and settings, from office-based personnel to those in more manual roles
- These assessments are particularly useful in scenarios whereby an employee has been absent from work for a prolonged period of time, or when a return to work plan has not been yet considered.
Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE)
Functional capacity evaluations (or assessments) are assessments involving:
- A detailed series of tests assessing various aspects of physical performance. It aims to evaluate an individual's ability to perform specific tasks or work-related functions, compared to others, after injury or due to physical impairments
- Helps to identify any barriers and functional constraints that may be impacting an employee’s work capability
- Guidance offered on recommended adjustments/work-related alterations that may allow an individual to remain in, or return to work
- FCE’s are especially useful for those staff with long-term conditions that may be struggling with their typical workload/work tasks, or those returning to work following long term absence.
The assessment involves aspects of lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, balance, fine motor and cardiovascular tolerance. These assessment are typically undertaken in-person, at the workplace, but away from the employee’s specific work area/station i.e. a meeting room, break out space, etc.
